How to choose the right website designer?

When it comes to getting your online presence sorted, it’s important to leave this in the right hands.

Ensuring that you are working with a web designer that emits a style that you’d like your brand to project.

So in this article, we’re going to look at some ways to help you choose the right website designer.

Let’s take a look.

Whether you work with me on a design project, or someone else, it’s always important to be aware of the difference between a good website designer and a (not so good) one.

  1. Look at their previous client work

The first thing you need to do is a look at a web designer’s previous client work.

Understand the types of projects they’ve taken on, and how this reflects their design style.

When you look at the websites they’ve previously created, do they look professional or a tad off?

These elements will help you understand if their design style is going to suit your brand.

2. Ask questions

It’s important for you to understand the designer’s working style.

Ask questions like:

  • What is involved in the website design?

  • Are there any extra fees or costs I should be aware of?

  • What does this cost include?

  • Will I be able to make changes to the site on my own?

3. Determine if the web designer uses templates or creates the site from scratch

This is a big difference.

If the web designer is using templates, it’s often that their job is to populate the information in.

Which is still a lot of work.

But it means that on the internet you will see versions of your own site all over it.

If a web designer is customising and designing a site to suit you, there it will be unique and stand out.

This point of difference will help you stand out from your competitors and is important.

4. Determine the deliverables you are required to supply

These sort of things are what affect the timeframe.

Often clients don’t realise that it is their job to provide to text/copy on the site along with certain imagery.

To understand what is required on your end to make sure that you have a clear understanding of how long the design process will take.

As well as what the web designer will be waiting for you to hand over.

5. Consider the interactions from the beginning

You will be spending a fair bit of time speaking with your website designer.

There is a lot of constant communication and back and forward.

So consider how you interact.

Are you on the same page and do they listen? Has it been this way from the beginning?

If so, then go ahead.

If not, then consider alternative options.

if you feel like you won’t be able to work together for at least a month, then this is something to consider.

Work with a website designer that understands what you’re looking for. Or at least works hard to.

So that you can walk away happy.

6. Feel comfortable to give feedback, and even walk away

Creating a transparent and clear relationship with your website designer will mean that you will walk away happy with the design.

Too often I hear of people closing off a project and they are secretly unhappy with the deliverables.

Either the design aesthetic isn’t in line with what the customer had in mind, or the web designer has gotten slack and not completed the job.

It is so important to be honest and let your web designer know how you feel.

Because without communication this is how issues can arise.

If you’re not happy with the site in the first pass, even feel free to cut the project there.

Sometimes it’s better off than moving forward and not being happy.
